TPS25942L: How to choose the rated maximum current

Part Number: TPS25942L
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54292, TPS25982

Hello,

This device was used on customer's board. The Vin_min is 11.4V and the Pin_max is 56W. So the maximum input current is 4.9A. TPS25942L is designed for maximum input current 5.2A. So my questions are:

1. Will TPS54292L meet this requirement with 0.3A margin?

2. How much current margin should be fine normally? 20%? 30%?

2. If TPS54292 is not a proper choice, which one is the most suitable?  Customer prefer pin to pin device. I have searched but no pin to pin device. Need you confirm.

Thanks.

  • Hi Anders,

    Welcome to E2E!

You should set the current limit at least 10% higher than the max load current so that the load current does not get limited. So, for max load current of 4.9A, the current limit should be at 4.9*1.10=5.39A which is few 100 mA above the recommended continuous current. We have not evaluated the device beyond 5.2A, there could be effect on the device life.

How much time the device is expected to run at rated current? what is the max ambient temperature ?

Unfortunately, there is no pin-to-pin device with higher current support.

    BR, Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh,

Typically the rated working current is 4.7A and the ambient is 65C. I have promote TPS25982 and customer accepted. Thanks for your help.
