BQ40Z50-R2: Not seeing CB Flag balance during testing

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hello I'm testing a design with a 3 cell battery, I'm specifically testing the Gauge functionality. The design has the FETs for balancing the cells in place.

In my fuel gauge file, Balancing Configuration setting is 0x07, Cell Balancing Config: Bal Time/mAh Cell1 is 367 s/mAh; Bal Time/mAh Cell 2-4 is 514 s/mAh; Min Start Balance Delta 3mv; Relax Balance Interval is 18000 s;Min Rsoc for Balancing is 80 %;Start RSOC for Bal in Sleep is 95 %;End Rsoc for Bal in Sleep is 60 %; StartTime for Bal in Sleep is 100 hrs. Update Status is 0x0e

During a charging or a relax mode, I cannot get CB bit of the Operation Status B to beset.

I'm using 3 power supplies for emulating the cells of my batteries I have also tried usign a single power supply and resistor divider for emulating the cells.

Would you please help me to know why cell balancing is not working and how should I proceed to get it working? A step by a step explanaition will definetly help me a lot.

Regards,

Jose

Please let me know if you need further details.

  • Hi, Jose

Have you seen QMAX bit in IT Status(high) Register or SLPQMAX bit in IT Status(low) Register toggled? A valid qmax update needs to occur before balancing starts

  • No, is it somehting I can configure to happen faster?

Does it need that one of the cells get upto Qmax value?

Does it have to do with the Update satus Register in the Gas Gauging/state/Update Status configuration?

    Thanks and regards,

    Jose

  • Hi, Hose

I am afraid there would be no such configuration to accelerate this process.

For Impedance tracking gauge, the DOD discrepancy between the cells has to determined before starting the balancing, so the QMAX has to be updated before the gauge to start balancing. Besides, there are still a lot of prerequisites for the cell balancing operations to start. For details, please refer to Chapter 7 in bq40z50TRM
