BQ25713: Charge with low current (20mA@8V)

Part Number: BQ25713

Hi,

I want to use BQ25713 in an energy harvesting board to charge a battery, and sometimes current can be as low as 20mA@8V. Can I use BQ25713 for this kind of application?

There is some circuits for energy harvesting with solar panels, but both voltage and current are higher than mine so I can't get any help from this.

Thanks

  • Hi Daniel,

Our charge current regulation LSB can be as low as 25mA(if you use 20mohm charge current sensing resistor). I assume this could fit your application.

  • can be little lower than 25mA sometimes.. maybe 18mA.
The gas gauge inside BQ25713 works well with this values?

  • Hi There,

Inside BQ25713 there is no gas gauge. The minimum value is 25mA can't support 18mA.

  • hi,

    a) Page 36 of the datasheet talks about LEARN function for the gas gauge. What gas gauge is?

LEARN function allows the battery to discharge while the adapter is present. It calibrates the battery gas gauge over a complete discharge/charge cycle. When the battery voltage is below battery depletion threshold, the system switches back to adapter input by the host. When CELL_BATPRESZ pin is LOW, the device exits LEARN mode and this bit is set back to 0. 0b: Disable LEARN Mode 1b: Enable LEARN Mode

    b) If BQ25713 don't have has gauge, can you please tell me a part with buck-boost input, low current charge and gas gauge?

    Thanks

  • Hi Daniel,

    a) Gas gauge is device inside battery pack to monitor battery charging status and protect battery. Using this integrated high-performance analog peripherals, it measures and maintains an accurate record of available capacity, voltage, current, temperature, and other critical parameters in Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries, and reports this information to the system host controller over an SMBus v1.1 compatible interface.

    b) For our BQ25713 buck boost charger, we recommend the bq40z50-R3 device as battery gauge providing a feature-rich battery management solution for 1-series cell to 4-series cell battery-pack applications.
