Hello,

I recently bought a BQ40Z80EVM-020 to help with developing a monitor that will use the bq40z80. I would like to test my host controller and its code on the BQ40Z80EVM-020, but I am not having success communicating with it.

The EVM communicates perfectly with the EV2400, so I am curious if I can only communicate with the EVM with the use of an EV2400.

Is there a configuration that allows a for an alternate SMBus host to issue commands to the BQ40Z80EVM-020?

You can communicate with the device using your host.

see app note below with sample code. though written for a different older device is mostly applicable to this.

Hello Onyx,

I am specifically interested in communication with the evaluation module of the bq40z80, not simply the bq40z80 on its own.

Documentation on the EVM does not indicate if a host controller other than the EV2400 can be used.

If it can, do you know the configuration? For example: there are two jumpers on the EVM that must be moved in order to specify if the onboard EV2400 will be used or if an external EV2400 will be used.

With the configuration set for an external EV2400, could any host controller poll the gas gauge for its information?

Hi Joseph,

How are you planning to route the SMBus signal from your host to the BQ40Z80 EVM? If you're using test points TP10 and TP11, the shunts for J18 and J22 can be removed or J18 shunt position pin 2 to pin 3 and J22 shunt position pin 1 to pin 2 . If J19 is used for SMBus, shunts for J18 and J22 should be J18 shunt position pin 2 to pin 3 and J22 shunt position pin 1 to pin 2. You shouldn't have any with your host communicating to the BQ40Z80 EVM once you follow the SMBus protocol. You should capture your host SMBus communication to BQ40Z80 EVM using oscilloscope or SMBus sniffer.
