BQ7718: companion protection for BQ40Z80

Part Number: BQ7718
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z80, BQ77915

on our BQ40Z80EVM we implemented two BQ771807 as independent secondary overvoltage protection. The BQ40Z80 already brings the primary overvoltage protection. is the second level protection mandatory for Li-Ion battery packs (5s)? The application is a consumer audio device.

  • Hi Hanno,

I'm not entirely sure, but I do not believe there is any law or regulation that requires two levels of protection. Generally, it is good practice because it ensures customer and device safety.

  • Hi,

when it is a good practice to have two levels of protection, why is there then only an overvoltage protection? Is overvoltage more critical then other protection mechanism?

  • Hi Sebastian,

Personally, I believe it is "better to be safe than sorry" and always endorse protection. Yes, over voltage is the most critical protection because it can lead to catastrophic failures. Usually, the system has either a battery gauge or charger that can act as a primary protector and includes under voltage, temperature, and current faults. However, we do have more advanced protectors such as the BQ77915 that include all of those protection features.
