Part Selection Help for PMIC with PowerPath, Buck/Boost. Wide input and output

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65090, TPS65070, TPS652170

I was hoping I could get some help with part selection. TI has so many different options it's hard to tell if there is a perfect option or not I just haven't found

I'm looking to see if there is already an all in one solution for a PMIC with BuckBoost and power path control with battery charging. A PMIC that has full adjustable control over the input and output voltage/current while supporting battery charging.

Vin = 4.5-12VDC

Vout = 5V-12VDC

Iout = 1.2A @12V
          2.88A @5V

          A 14.4 W supply

Must support at least 2 Cell Battery charging. 3 Cell is a plus

Li-on and/or Li-Po

With or without cell balancing

I need a PMIC that will handling charging the battery while still powering the load. Battery charging current will reduce if input source can not provide enough for both.

Features:
1) I need to be able to adjust the load voltage from an MCU. analog control is fine

2) Adjustable input current I would like to be able to tell the controller what the input power source is capable of. If the controller can't do that already, then I will need a way to do it externally via adjust the load voltage or something.

3) Adjustable load current threshold is a plus. If not that is fine, I can just adjust the output voltage to limit.

  • Matt,

    The only PMIC I can recommend is TPS65090.

    The majority of PMICs do not have an integrated battery charger. Most PMICs that have an integrated charger (TPS65070, TPS652170) only support charging a single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Po battery.

    You might want to look at 2-3 cell battery chargers (BQ- product) with power path management and discrete Buck-Boost regulators.
