CSD18540Q5B: FET recommendation for a 5V 16A design of LM25116.

Part Number: CSD18540Q5B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM25116, , CSD18531Q5A, CSD18563Q5A, CSD17581Q5A

Hi,

My customer consider to use LM25116 for a 24Vin ,5V16A design. by using the choosing tools, I got the FET recommendation as below. but according to the RθJA (50°C/W)  of CSD18540Q5B,  the temperature will be very high. please suggest if CSD18540Q5B is a suitable device for this scenario. thanks.

  • Yue,

    Thanks for considering our FETs.

The Rth you are using is Rthja, the Rth for a part mounted on a pcb should be Rthjc, when I put your conditions in the tool the 60V recommendation I would make would be CSD18540Q5B as the low side FET and CSD18563Q5A as the high side FET. For the low side, you could even consider the CSD18531Q5A (lower cost vs CSD18540Q5B). All the power losses for the FETs show <3W which is manageable in a typical application.

See blog written here for typical power dissipation capabilities of FET packages
