TPS53681: Maximum output current

Part Number: TPS53681
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS536C7

Hi Team, our customer is seeking clarification for maximum output current. Below is their question

"In my current design, already TPS53681(6phase)+Csd95490(75A) is used,so does this mean it can support 6phase*75A = 450A? "

Thank you in advance

  • Hi Mark,

The real power limitation is from the smart power stage device. Industry practice is to publish peak current ratings for power stage devices. E.g. 75A for CSD95490. However, that does not mean CSD95490 can handle 75Adc thermally. It depends on the PCB copper layer stackup and system cooling, but a good rule of thumb is 30-40A/phase.

At the same time, the maximum available overcurrent protection limit for TPS53681 is 255*1.5= 382A.

You may be interested in a 12 phase controller we are developing, TPS536C7. This will release in 2020. For more information, you can email vr [at] list [dot] ti [dot] com. For more information. As the device is yet unreleased, we will require NDA to release information as of today.
