BQ25708: Buck Only Design

Part Number: BQ25708
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24780S, BQ24765

Hi,

I am looking to use the bq25708 for a lead-acid (12V) battery. My input voltage is 24V so I will not need the boost functionality that this device also provides.

Is it possible to not place FETs for the boost stage and still have this device work?

The other option would be to look at the bq24780S but the adapter detect and auto system power selection is un-needed.

Thank you,

Reed

  • Hi There,

BQ25708 has to work with buck-boost architecture.

I think BQ24780s buck type charger fits better for your application. And if your charge current is below 4A, I think FETs integrated charger BQ2417x should also work for your case.

  • Shishuo,

Thank you for the response. The BQ24780S or the BQ24765 seem to be good fits. This will be running of a 24V bus with +/-10% tolerance (VMAX = 26.4V).

The recommended VIN range stops at 24V but the ABS MAX is 30V. Is this a typical use for these devices (running off of 24V +/-10%)? Is that acceptable?

    Thanks,

    Reed

  • Hi Reed,

+10% may have problem. Because ACOV is typical 26V and minimum value could be 24V.  They converter will shut down if ACOV is triggered and re-start until ACOV is gone.
