TPS62290: TPS62290

TPS62290 problem.

My design has TPS62290 as '5V->3.3V converter'.
It's well running and there is no problems, even in very high temparture test.

But when I touch the top of the chip(62290),
it's going to very high temparature(about 110 celcius) immediatly,
and it's never come back, it is burn out!

Below are my schematic and lay out.
I tried in/out capacitor as 10uF, mode pin to low.

I use 3 chips in my design,
two of TPS62290(5->3.3V, Max 0.6A load) show same burn out,
one of TPS62290(5->1.2V, Max 0.6A load) never happened.

  • Hi Kang,

    The recommended output capacitors is in the range of 4.7uF to 22uF but the schematic shows 3 x 47uF which is way above the recommended value. Can you try to reduce the Cout to 22F then check again?

    I tried 10uF for input & output capacitor as data sheets.(as mentioned in my post)

    But there's no different.

    Did you touch the top face of the chip, while it runs?

    I'll test TI's EVM and write a result here soon.

    I touched the IC while the EVM is running and it is still working properly (Vout regulated @ 1.8V/600mA).

    Are you ESD protected when you touched the TPS62290? What is the result when you tested the EVM? Is the IC damaged as well?

    Is the device properly mounted in your board @ 3.3Vout? Improper soldering may create uneven surface which may cause crack when you pressed the device?

    I had test with wall mount power(5V/1A) as a 5V input supply.
    It led me to bad result, burn out of chips.

    The 5V/3A stand alone power supply shows no burn out.
    I conclude that less current capacity of input power was the reason.

    Input/output capacitor value & ESD protections don't affect the chip's functions.
