Forward converter using GaN FETs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC2897A, LMG1210, LM5113

I am planning to build a 10 W active clamp forward converter using GaN FETs instead of conventional Si MOSFETs. I came to know that there are no dedicated Forward controller drivers for GaN devices, Kindly suggest me a combination of modulator and driver I should use for my purpose . GaN device that I have been planning to use is is nearly of 200V and 5A. So, it would be a favor if you could suggest a device with compatible modulator and driver combination.

  • Hi Vadher,

If it is sure that you will use active clamp forward converter for 10 W design, in my view, fly-back is a cheaper choice for 10 W.

I will recommend you UCC2897A for active clamp forward converter.

As for GaN driver, I will contact GaN team to answer your question.

  • Hi Vadher,

I suggest that you look at EPC's website. Is the max. voltage you see 200V? If so, it would be hard for you to find a FET since EPC FETs are typically with max. 200V voltage. Or you have to go with LMG3410 series in TI which is 600V rated.

In terms of driver. LMG1210 with 200V rating is a good option. TI's LMG3410 series has included driver internally. Thanks!

  • Hi Lixing

Thanks for your reply .I have identified EPC2012C (200V,5A) as my switch , is it compatible with LM5113 / LMG1210
