TPS61161: Use TPS61161 as a camera flash driver to drive 10 LEDs in series at 350mA

Can I use TPS61161 as a camera flash driver to drive 10 LEDs in series at 350mA and as a torch at lower current?

I am looking for a camera flash driver to drive 10 LEDs in series. I have seen similar drivers that are specifically market as 'camera flash', but not TPS61161.

I am wondering if there is any things to lookout or caveat of using TPS61161 for camera flash application.

And if you can recommended me another driver IC for my camera flash/torch application.

Hi Chris,

What's your input voltage range and output voltage? I can help to estimate the capabilty. Maybe TPS61165 or TPS61169 is more suitable.

Hi Sean,

input voltage range = 3.2V-4.2V, Li-ion battery supplied voltage

output voltage range = 25V-33V, 10 series LED, with 3.0V nominal voltage each

output current = 0-350mA.

on/off for cam flash and PWM controlled for torch.

For such kind of high current application, you can try with TPS61500.

Hi Sean,

My output current is only up to 350mA. So TPS61161, which can support up to 700mA, will be just fine? TPS61500 is for much higher current application, ~3A.

My concern is if it is suitable for camera flash application. Can you comment on this?

Hi Chris,

For Vin=3V, Vout=33V, Iout=350mA the average input current is over 3A, so TPS61161 can't support such kind of application due to internal current limit limitation.
