BQ40Z50: Cell open detection

Part Number: BQ40Z50

Hi Team,

My customer is developing a 2s2p gauge solution for VR(virtual reality) application, and I would like to know in that 2p cell, if one cell is open, can our gauge IC detect it out?

Thank you.

  • There is no such protection for bq40z50, but if the cell connecting wire for battery monitoring is open, then the gauge will probably read wrong voltage and other faults, like over voltage or under voltage could be possibly triggered.

  • Hi Steven,

If one cell is open in 2P structure, means the current of that cell will increase and voltage drop will be larger. Your gauge IC has cell balance detection (for 2S), can you do the cell balance then check if one cell is open in 2P structure?

  • Hi, Kane

Yes, the voltage difference between the 2 cells with cell connection wire broken in series will deteriorated when cell balancing started. but cell balancing can not be started by sending command, it starts automatically according the voltage or SOC variation between the cells.

  • Steven

Would you please explain this more detail to me?

" it starts automatically according the voltage or SOC variation between the cells. "

My understanding is if voltage change or SOC updated, gauge IC will do cell balance detection automatically, it this correct?

The first time balancing will be started when a valid DOD update has occurred, then afterward, The gauge will attempt to recalculate the cell balancing time in RELAX mode every Relax Balance Interval.
