WEBENCH® Tools/LM5170: Possibility to use as boost and also like buck

Part Number: LM5170

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi,

I have variable input voltage for example from 18V to 30V (Pb batteries or alternator), I would like to use LM5170 like a boost converter.

How will the converter behave when the input voltage is higher than the output?

Thank you.

  • Hi,

Thank you for considering the LM5170.  If you just use it in Boost mode but your input voltage becomes higher than the output, the circuit should stop switching and your input can bypass to the output through the body diode of the high side FET.  There should have not back flow current because of the Diode Emulation of the LM5170.

    Thanks,
