BQ79606A-Q1: Problem waking it up for the first time

Part Number: BQ79606A-Q1

Dear TI experts,

We are working on building our own BMS and we have opted to use your BQ79606A-Q1 but we have some issues.

We have a BQ79606A-Q1 with the needed electronic components and connections made, and we am trying to make it balance 6 Li-ion cells also connected, but the problem appears when trying to wake it up in order to start balancing them. For the wake up we are sending from an arduino a low bit for 250 us (microseconds) and then a high bit for more than 30 us to the wake up pin (the 16th) as said in the datasheet.

Then, even we don't send anything else, the BQ should start running and doing his job, shouldn't it?

Are we doing something wrong at the process of waking it up?

Best regards,

Alex

  • Hi Alex,

Can you please first try testing your hardware with our GUI first? We need to identify is there is a hardware issue or not first. Also does the wakeup work on the second try or it never wakes up?

  • Good morning Taylor,

We are a group of students and currently we can't not afford your EVM, so is there any other method in order to identify if it is a hardware issue?

Also, is there any pin that should pull high or low when the BQ79606A-Q1 is active, so we can actually see if we have acheived it?

    Thanks,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

In short, wakeup can be confirmed if AVDD rises to 5V. A few important things to check is that wakeup pin is not grounded and if it is pulled up to VIO correctly. Also check that VIO is supplied a VCC rail (i.e. 5V).  Please take a look at the datasheet start up sequence to understand further details and cross check with our EVM reference schematic to ensure there are no hardware issues.

    Regards,

    Taylor

  • Hi Taylor,

We have finally acheived to do the wake up and the AVDD has rised to 5V, now the problem comes when after one minute the AVDD decreases to 0V.

Shouldn't it keep at 5V, because else it means that the BQ has turned to shutdown? Is there any way to solve this?

    Best regards,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

Are you attempting any further comms or actions using the device after wakeup?

Can you check if you have enabled any comm timeouts that will send the device to shutdown? Section 8.5.1.6 of the datasheet.
