TPS2372-4EVM-006: PoE Isolation / 2 x Magnetics

Part Number: TPS2372-4EVM-006
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2372

Hi,

We are looking to create a PoE splitter to extract DC power from a PoE source and pass-through the data to a standard Ethernet device. Looking at the schematic of the TPS2372 EVM there are magnetics to allow extraction of the power from the centre taps and then the other side of the magnetics passes out of the other RJ45. If this is connected to a standard Ethernet device there will be two magnetics in series - is this OK, are the losses an issue ?

Thanks

Julian

  • Hi Julian,

The EVM's data RJ45 connect is mainly there for evaluation if the extracted data needs to be tested/processed. The EVM mainly focuses on the power design. In typical application, it wouldn't need to go through another data transformer. There will be some losses if you use two data transformers in series; however, I will say we have tested the data output of our EVMs in the past by connecting it to an IP phone and we had no issues in performance in making calls. This is an informal test but this gives you one data point on your system design.

  • Thanks, that's useful information.
