BQ24715: gas gauge broadcasting

Part Number: BQ24715

Hi,

Is there any way to know the SOC of the battery using gas gauge broadcasting?

Section 8.5.1.1 says gas gauge broadcasting  is supported, Can you please tell me what does it mean and in what ways this can be used?

Happy New Year

Thankyou

Regards

  • Hi Harini,

When our chargers mention that they support gas gauge broadcasting, it is in reference to the smart battery charger specification as can be found here:

    http://www.sbs-forum.org/specs/sbc110.pdf

These chargers, including BQ24715, can receive commands that are broadcast from the gauge over SMBUS.  For instance, the ChargeVoltage() and ChargeCurrent() registers at the standard addresses of 0x14 and 0x15 correspond to the definitions in this spec and can therefore be updated by a gauge device that also supports the standard.  This allows a charger  such as BQ24715 to be directly controlled by the gauge without an intermediate microcontroller having to "translate" between the two devices.

I don't believe that the State of charge (SoC) information is directly communicated over SMBUS to our charger device using this standard, instead the gauge uses this information to determine appropriate values for ChargeVoltage(), ChargeCurrent() and other parameters that it broadcasts to our device.

You may want to check with the gauge team by submitting a question for a specific gauge part number to understand more about the best way to pull information from this device.  (We have different support teams for gauges and chargers and while we have some familiarity with each other's products, that team can give you more specific information on how to use the gauge product.)

    Regards,

    Steve
