TPS3606-33: VOUT Operation when VBAT <1.5V

Part Number: TPS3606-33

We are using the TPS3606-33 part. The input is the Aux supply which provides VDD = 3.3V & we have battery backup of VBAT = 3.6V.

What we have observed is that; if VBAT is low <1.5V, and if VDD of 3.3V is applied, sometimes VOUT does not provide output of 3.3V.

What is the reason for this erroneous behavior of TPS3606?

  • Hi Gautam,

The reason for this is Vbat(min), as defined in the recommended operating conditions as shown below. You need to keep Vbat above 1.5V for proper response.

    Thanks,

    Abhinav.

  • Hi Abhinav,

we tested the design for Vbat= 0V earlier and didn't find any issue while Vdd comes back.

Presently also, the problem can't be reproduced 100%, sometime it switches Vdd and sometimes not. When it doesn't switch then it is always in problem mode but if we give a repeated power ON / OFF  on Vdd then it starts connecting back, while Vbat = 0V and device boots in the normal mode.

Why would the TPS3606 behave differently ?

      Thanks,

          Vinayak

  • Vinayak,

The officially supported value for minimum Vdd is 1.5 V. Past this, it could work, but it cannot be well defined and thus guaranteed.

    Thanks,
    Abhinav.
