BQ24610: could not fully charge from 19.5V input to 16.4V battery

Part Number: BQ24610

Hello,

Our customer is annoyed bq24610 could not fully charge in narrow input to output voltage condition.

The input voltage is 19.5V and charge 4 cell battery of 16.4V full charge voltage. However the battery charge operation is stopped at 16V VBAT.

It seems like DPM does not work and 83.3% duty cycle is enough to operate.

Could you help him out if you have possible reason or similar experiences.

Best regards,

  • Hi Toshiro,

19.5V input and 16.4V charge regulation voltage is valid headroom for charger to charge. What is STAT1 and STAT2 pin status when charge is stopped? Is STAT1 and STAT2 off, or is STAT2 on and STAT1 off?

    • When charge is stopped at 16V, is current tapering till termination condition is satisfied? I want to see if the charger is in Constant voltage charging mode, or if charge is being abruptly stopped when charger is in CC mode. What is resistor values for resistor configuration from VBAT to VFB, and VFB to GND?
    • When charge stops is fault condition reported on STAT pins? If STAT1 and STA2 are both off, then it is possible charger has entered SLEEP condition. This can happen if there is high input current, across significant impedance between input power supply and VCC pin. Please measure VCC close to IC, and not DC values sourced by input power supply.

  • Thank you very much for your help. Our customer resolved this issue by replacing the output capacitor to ceramic capacitor.

It seems like coming from larger output ripple stop charging.

    Best regards,
