cant read bq78PL114 EVM parameter on SMBUS

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQWIZARD, BQ76PL102, BQ78PL114

Hi, I'm working on configuring a 8 cell battery circuit on a bq78PL114 EVM. Right now I'm just conecting 8 battery cells with EVM as shown in the user's guide. However, when I try to run bqWizard, it can find the 8 cells, but all cell voltage are 2000mV,all Temp are 0.0 . Can anyone help me how to read correct voltage and temprature?

Thanks,

Pong Chung,

  • This could actually be a sign that not all eight PowerLAN nodes are being built.  Each cell has a PowerLAN node associated with it.  A reading of 2000mV means that communication between the bq78PL114 and bq76PL102 is not working for all devices.  If one node is not working the whole network is considered failed.

There are several .tmap files that come with the bqWizard for the bq78PL114 with firmware 4452.  The troubleshooting process for a problem such as yours aims to start with the lowest number of series cells and then try to build up to eight.  So incrementally load the 3S.tmap file through the load file and relearn command under the File menu.  If sucessful, load a 4S.tmap file.  Continue this until (a) you get to 8S or (b) you get a failure.

  • hi  Jim M:

thank you! I try several times. My Circuit just get 3S cells.

So I think that my DIMM Circuit Module is broken. Can I only buy a new DIMM Circuit  Module from (BQ78PL114 + BQ76PL102 Evaluation Kit) ?

  • The DIMM is not sold separately.

You may want to remove the DIMM and then power the base board.  At this point double check that all voltages are looking good.  Remove power.

Reinsert the DIMM and apply power in the sequence shown in the attachment.

If this does not work, you may need to either repair this EVM or buy another.

I recommend constructing the 10 Ohm resistor simulator circuit for the first power up of the EVM.  And use the connection sequence, this is the safest method.  See EVM Guide too.

  • Hi Jim...

I am using a 5S config in 114 EVM. I am trying to communicate through SMBus.I am getting the ack properly. But am getting junk for data. I doubt my connection. I read the cell sequence document. Can you please explain me about , what does that 1 4 3 6 5 7 7 - written for 5S config ? does that mean i have to connect in this order in J11 ?
