TPS54340: Performance of TPS54340 with MLCC and electrolytic capacitors

Part Number: TPS54340

Hello,

We are using TPS54340 in one of our applications,

In that We have selected electrolytic capacitor as output capacitor. But we observed output shoot (Power on glitch 0f 8V for 100msec) at power ON at 5V output with and without load both.

We replaced output capacitors with MLCC capacitors then 5V output rise is smooth and did not found and POWER ON  glitch.

Query 1:- What is difference between using MLCC and electrolytic capacitor as output capacitor for TPS54340?

reference schematics found below:-

  • Hi Rohidas,

I cannot see the schematics attached. I think it is uploaded in a format that this forum doesn't support.

To really understand the implication of both output caps, we need to do the close loop analysis and study the phase margin changes brought by zeros due to ESR of both the caps. I would recommend using TI webench to understand the difference in stability due to ESRs of different caps.
