TPS55160-Q1: Will not start up in boost mode

Part Number: TPS55160-Q1

Hello,

I have a TPS55160 in my circuit as shown below.  It is configured to output +6V, with an input voltage of either +5V or +20V.  If I supply the input with +6V or above, the circuit runs fine, but if +5V os supplied, the circuit will not start . (output = 0V)  Can you see anything wrong with the circuit ?

  • Dear Sir,

The sch is OK. Please post your pcb layout.

  • Hello Helen,

Thank you for reviewing the schematic.  I think I have the answer as a colleague has pointed out a line in the data sheet that I had missed. Even thought the data sheet list a 'feature' as:

    "2-V to 36-V Input Voltage Range for VOUT = 5 V",

the details of the data sheet show something else.  At the bottom of page 6 we can see that 1.1c claims operating supply input voltage of 3.6 to 36V for the 16550.  However,  line 1.2 then says the minimum input voltage for startup is 5.3V.  For my application, the supply needs to start at 5V, so I will have to select a different part.

  • Dear Sir,

You can tune Vin to above 5.3V to double check. turn on the TPS55165 at Vin>5.3V, then tune down the Vin to 5V or 4.5V to see whether it can work normally.

By the way, what is your maximum load current?
