BQ25570: Properly charge a LiPo battery?

Part Number: BQ25570

I'm interested in using the BQ25570 to charge a small LiPo battery with a single Sunpower solar cell. Most LiPo battery chargers supply constant current and then top off with constant voltage to my understanding. The BQ25570 only seems to monitor the under voltage and over voltage of the battery. Is this still considered an acceptable way to charge?

Thanks,

Rob

  • Hi Rob,

Since the BQ25570 is a boost charger, its charge current is quite small, depending of the solar panel's output power.  Also, the boost charger operates in essentially pulsed frequency modulation (PFM) mode and therefore provides the charge current in bursts rather than a constant current.  So the average charge current is likely well below 1C for all but the smallest of batteries.  Therefore, having only constant voltage charge is considered acceptable for most batteries.

    Regards,

    Jeff
