which linear regulator is best for fixed 3.3V and greater than 2A output

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM324, LM1117, TLV8544, BOOSTXL-TLV8544PIR, LM2596, LM117, LM1085, TPS74901, TPS7A92

Hi Experts,

Currently, i am working for PIR and Smoke sensor with ESP8266,i have my own PIR(IRA-S210ST01) design using an LM324 amplifier it connect with LM1117 power supply here i have faced the issue with ESP8266 wifi disconnect automatically that's why i choose BOOSTXL-TLV8544 evaluation board then my demo module working fine now. so i decided to use  BOOSTXL-TLV8544 PIR schematic for PIR design i need some clarification for my below doubts,

this thread shows my previous problem about to why i chose TLV8544 amplifier https://e2e.ti.com/support/amplifiers/f/14/p/867310/3221664#3221664

1. i have changed the PIR sensor, i am going to use IRA-S210ST01 instead of IRS-B210ST01 with the same BOOSTXL-TLV8544PIR schematic if the sensor alteration makes any problem here or not.

2. i have designed my demo module with LM2596 regulator but that makes a lot of noise in output so i can't get constant output from my BOOSTXL-TLV8544PIR evaluation board then i have changed LM117 now that is working fine, but i want to add Non-ionized( IR& Photo diode-based) Smoke sensor with RE46C191 from Microchip because Ti does not have any IC like this, then i need to design fixed power supply for this design (3.3V, and >2A), here i am little confused to choose correct linear regulator for this design so kindly help to find low-cost liner regulator for my requirements.

  • Kannan,

Thanks for reaching out here. Can you provide some additional detail about your input voltage source here? What's the expected VIN range that the LDO needs to handle?

For lower VIN ranges, I would recommend looking into the TPS7A92 and/or the TPS74901. If higher VIN is needed then the LM1085 is an option which supports >2 A output current and VIN>12V. Let me know if any of these options could work

  • Hi

thanks for the suggestion then i have purchased the Voltage adapters(230V-AC to 12V/5V DC) from china for the input to the LDO, so here the input voltage is not a problem here i can choose 12V/5V adapters, then the TPS series LDO's doesn't have a fixed voltage type but LM1085 have a fixed voltage model here i have some doubt

For example, if I choose TPS7A92 and i set R1-3.57K, R2-1.15k for 3.3V then my AC to DC adapter gives 4.5V to 5.5V oscillated output to LDO, here i get constant voltage 3.3 or varied output.

  • Kannan Natesh,

As long as you select the correct output resistors to set the output voltage, then the LDO will always try to regulate to a constant output (output will not vary). You should not have any concerns about the output varying or swinging with the input voltage.
