BQ78350-R1: balancing, real cell connectivity and AFE cell map.

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350, , BQSTUDIO

Good day!

I work with BQ78350BDTR-R1 and BQ7693000DBT on my board.

During the tests I've found an issue with cell balancing. It seems like AFE doesn't balance them, but rather unbalance. You can see that on attached screenshot that shows the final stage of charging. After that BQ78350 detects COV and shutdowns charge FET.

I have also attached partial schematics and AFE cell map. As you can see, I use 6 LiFePo4 battery packs in series (1100 mAh, 3.6V each battery).  Do you see any mistake? What can cause such problem?

  • Hi Robert,

I don't see an issue in the schematic or the AFE Cell Map settings. The AFE does not control the cell balancing - it is controlled by the BQ78350-R1. Have you enabled cell balancing on the BQ78350 and set up the related data flash parameters? Have you tried the same experiment with cell balancing disabled to see if the issue goes away?

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • Good morning Matt,

Yes, I'm pretty sure, that I enabled cell balancing. I see, that it enables balancing in Operation Status B register in bqStudio while charging. Now I'm experimenting with its parameters. Today I'm gonna try to disable it, as you advised, I'll show the results later.

    Best regards,

    Robert
