TPS84610: Fault contition and effect

Part Number: TPS84610

Hi,

we are doing FMEA analysis of circuit with TPS84610 inside.

Could you explain me what happens when Vin is higher (12V) than the max absolute rating value?

My concern is to verify that the consequent faut does not cause the input voltage (12V) directly on the output, otherwise a downstream chain reaction would be triggered.

Thanks,

Alberto

  • Hi Alberto,

We do not specify what happens when the absolute maximum ratings are exceeded.  For your specific example, 12V will certainly damage the module and break the silicon devices inside.  It is possible that when the silicon breaks, it shorts and connects Vin to Vout.

If it is possible that your customer connects 12V where there should only be 5V, I suggest you use a higher rated input voltage module or a discrete protection circuit like this: http://www.ti.com/tool/PMP9757
