TPS61022: Continuous Device Failure

Part Number: TPS61022
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61230,

Mam/Sir,

Our application is m2m IOT device, based on Quectel EC20 LTE module & ESWROOM32D WiFi MCU. Input supply is a 3.7 V 36Ah Li Ion Battery.  Required Average output voltage is 3.8V.

Initially the boost  converter's output is stable, but during burst transmission (2A max  according to EC20 datasheet) the device does not receive the sufficient power and brown outs. This happens continuously, effectively damaging our module.

This is the reference design we got from wbench:

Kindly comment on our design and recommend any changes if any. Additionally please recommend any power supply IC/Design for the same application (GPRS/LTE, 3.7V Li Ion)

Thank you

NB:

Battery used : 12 Cell 18650 3.7V 2.6Ah battery. (Parallel)

Battery Cable resistance: 1 - 2 ohm (Total of both wires)

  • Hi Nandu,

the layout seem mismatch the schematic, the C1 is  the output capacitor in the schematic, but it is not from the layout.

please also move the C2 as closed to the IC as possible and add another two 22uF capacitor.

    alternative solution is TPS61230.

Thank you for your reply. Could you please explain why we need the additional capacitor at the output (not mentioned in the wbench design). Also what advantage is there in using TPS61230 in my particular application?

    Regards

  • Hi Nandu,

the effective capacitance of a ceramic cap is small at DC voltage bias. so the device need more capacitor to be stable.

I think you want me to suggest alternative solution. that is why I mentioned TPS61230. one advantage of TPS61230 is the program UVLO feature. you can also use TPS61022 to have better efficiency.

  • HI Nandu,

    did you solve the issue?
