UC3854: Driving C3M0065090D MOSFET

Part Number: UC3854
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27524

Hi Team,

Need your inputs on this. We want to verify if the UC3854 can be used to control the C3M0065090D mosfet. This is a requirement for a boost converter controller (External Switch). Application is 350-420V DC input to 440V DC output, 10A. (4kW output). If in case the IC won't be capable, can you help us with an alternate product?

Thank you very much in advance.

Kind Regards,

Jejomar

  • Hi Jejomar, an expert will get back to you tomorrow. Thanks.  —— Teng

  • Hi Jejomar:

my understanding is you want to use UC3854 as DC input boost.

if my undstanding is correct, my answer is yes, UC3854 can work with DC input.

By the way, the controller has 1A driving capability, if need to further increase the driving capability, you can add a driving IC,such as UCC27524 between controller and the mosfet.

  • Hi Jejomar,

C3M0065090D is a SiC mosfet, which is recommended to use minus voltage to turn off.

I'd like to suggest you to use a normal Si mosfet.

  • Hi Teng,

The customer wants to use C3M0065090D MOSFET and connect to UC3854. Is UC3854 capable of driving the C3M0065090D? If not, can you recommend an alternative to UC3854?

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

I know that many customers use the similar devices to driver the SiC MOSFET, and  it works.

In this case, according the C3M0065090D datasheet, the minimum Gate Threshold Voltage  is 2.1V @ 25C, 1.6V @150C, its recommended operational Gate - Source Voltage is -4/+15V, while using a 15V turn-on voltage to get a small Rds_on, and using a small minus turn-off voltage to improve speed and reliability.   The output of UC3854 is internally clamped to 15 V, so the maximum output voltage is 15V,typically 14.5V, when VCC>18V.

In my opinion, UC3854 can be used to driver C3M0065090D, maybe it just can’t get the optimal switching off speed and Rds_on.

    Regards,

    Teng
