TPS63020: Regarding Power consumption of TPS63020 buck boost converter

Part Number: TPS63020

Hello Sir,

During evaluating our buck boost application we are facing issue of power consumption of buck boost converter . TPS63020 converter ic take approx 18mA current in operating mode.our application is battery operated so we can not afford this much current consumption so kindly review our schematic and give needful suggestion for reduce power consumption of buck boost converter .

we are giving 5v @ 3A as input and want to take 4.2V @ 2.5A  output. we are getting output which we want but current consumption is so much .

Waiting for your prompt response.

Thanks,

Denish

  • Hello Danish,

In your design PS/SYNC is connected to VIN. This means that the part is in forced PWM mode, so it is permanently switching, causing higher current consumption at low loads. Please connect this pin to GND and the input current will be reduced.

  • Hello Brigite,

    Thanks for your quick response.

If i connect PSYNC pin to GND . then my buck boost o/p voltage(4.2V)  more then(4.45V) i require approx 20% and it is vary between 3.7V to 4.5V not constant and it may be damage my GSM module.

So you have another solution for it what can we do or use another buck boost converter or other things?

    Thanks,

    Denish

  • Hi Denish,

In power safe mode the device will increase the output voltage approximatly 3% to compensate load transients.

Could you please share your layout?

    regards,

    Moritz

  • Hi Moritz,

Kindly find attached pic for layout of TPS63020.

    Thanks,

    Denish

  • Hello Denish,

Do you have a GND layer below the blue layer above? If yes, please share as well.

Please share some measurements of the output voltage and possibly the load current. With this information it might be possible to understand the voltage shift you are observing. Normally this should not happen in power save mode.

Another possible solution for reducing the power consumption at low output voltage would be to toggle the PS/SYNC pin to GND during low current requirements and to VIN shortly before there is high current requirement. As you are speaking about a GSM modem, maybe you know when high current is required.

  • Hello Brigite,

    Thanks for your quick response.

Do you have a GND layer below the blue layer above? If yes, please share as well.

    No, This bottom layer.

We Tested both mode configuration PS/SYS pin high and Low configuration and able to reduce current consumption at PS/SYS Low pin configuration appx 1.99mA operating current.

Observed PS/SYS pin at low configuration

    1. At Low Load :- Voltage is unstable and very between 3.9V to 4.5V at below 100mA load condition .

    2. At High Load current up to 300mA-500mA Voltage get stable output voltage level 4.2V.

In our application continues current appx 600-800mA in active mode and peak current is appx 2A so, kindly let us know can we use PS/SYS pin at Low configuration mode with full load condition ?

    Waiting for your response.

  • Hello Sir/Mam

This is gentle reminder for  PS/SYS pin at low configuration status.

Kindly guide us can we use PS/SYS pin at Low configuration mode with full load condition ?

In our application continues current appx 600-800mA in active mode and peak current is appx 2A .

    Waiting for your inputs

    Thank you..

    Denish

  • Hi Denish,

    sorry for the delay.

You can use PS/SYNC pin at low with your load current in active mode. The TPS63020 switches to PWM mode automatically above 100mA.

Yet the votlage oscillation below 100mA is strange. If you want to understand that and try to debug that please kindly do the below written:

    - Can you please highlight the output caps in your layout?

    - If possible please measure  VOUT, L1, L2 and Iload and post it as a scope screenshot?

else, we were happy to help.

    regards,

    Moritz
