TPS2561: Reverse Current from Bus Side / USB Bus Surge

Part Number: TPS2561

Dear Support,

Our customer wants to use the TPS2561 as high side switch to power two USB 3.0 Ports. I found out that the device protects against reverse current in off-mode.

But now I have two questions:

1. Is it common / recommended to protect USB power switches against reverse current in active mode; speaking of a surge from bus side? If yes: Are there USB high side switches with this functionality or would our customer need a smart high side switch?

2. Is there a meaning after the last letter in the GPN (like TPS20xxC or TPS20xxD) other than the version number?

Thank you in advance and best regards

  • Hi Sir,

    1. TPS2561 doesn't have the reverse current blocking function as power on.

Only can block the reverse voltage as IC is disabled.

    2. C version and D version is only minor difference with craft. The function is almost the same.

  • Hi Ziv,

Thank you for the quick answer!

As the TPS2561 has no reverse current blocking when powered on, would you recommend to protect it with discrete components against reverse current? For example when a connected electronic is generating an over voltage for a short time? If there is a standard protection circuit would you please provide some information about it?

  • Hi sir,

How long time about the reverse current is allowed?
