LM3488: SEPIC Converter

Part Number: LM3488

How to select specific switching frequency for SEPIC converter to design Battery voltage to 5V@1A . Also in the circuit where and how actually SEPIC converter step up and step down the voltage. I am new in embedded hardware so guide me.

  • Hi Vanaraj,

For dc-dc converter, the designer selects the switching frequency. This switching frequency will determine the size of your power stage components, and compensation loop to make the system stable. As a general guideline, higher switching frequencies will give you lower part size and increased power density, but your efficiency will decrease due to increased switching losses. On the other hand, lower switching frequencies will give you increased part size, but also higher efficiency.

The operation of the SEPIC converter can be seen here: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva168e/snva168e.pdf

in that energy stored during the switch on-time in the inductor will be transferred to the output during Q1 off-time.

This may also be helpful to getting started on the general waveforms for a SEPIC:
