BQ79606A-Q1: CBn connections when balancing is not used

Hello,

Need a bit of help regarding the CBn connections.

Datasheet mentions that if balancing is not used short CBn to CB(n-1).that would mean that if no balancing is used at all, all the CBn pins will be shorted.

However the protector comparators use CBn to measure the voltage and not the VCn pins. if the CBn pins are all shorted then the hardware comparators will not able to work.

What is the correct approach here? I need to use the hardware protectors as this is designed for a safety circuit.

Can CBn be directly connected to VCn pins?

Do i need to use balancing resistors/capacitors for the CBn pins regardless of the fact that i'm not using the balancing function?

Hi Panagiotis,

If you want to use other functionality that requires the CB pins like comparators or diagnostics than you need to connect the CB pins as you would for balancing even if you are not planning to do cell balancing. The pins should only be shorted together if they are unused cells or you dont want any CB pin functionality.

in such case can the resistors for the CBn and VCn pins be of equal value? (again not going to use balancing)

Also as in my previous question can the CBn and VCn pins be connected together to avoid doubling up on the filters?

Hi Panagiotis,

It is possible but that would not be recommended as the filter specific for the VC and CB pins is also used for hotplug and redundant cell measurement diagnostics.

having gone thought the rest of the documentation it's clear now that some diagnostics require all the resistors to be in place, so yes that will be finally what has to be done.
