PFC for 480VAC input

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28180

Hello,

I am looking for a solution for PFC (Power factor correction) with a 480VAC line input supply.  I am looking both for the controller solution, as well as the MOSFET solution.  I would like to use GaN FETs if possible, but they are limited to 600 or 650V.  Is there a way to use GaN technology in a PFC solution for 480VAC input?  Please let me know.

Thanks,

Mohan

  • Hello Mohan,

You may use UCC28180 which operates in CCM mode for high power applications.

There is a limitation on the Vds rating of the GaN FET as you correctly pointed out. Would you be open to SiC MOSFETs for your design?

I would like to point out that the PFC output voltage will be higher than the input voltage so you need to design for an output voltage of ~700Vdc. May you please share detailed design spec: like output power/voltage, switching freq, application type, etc. for better understanding.

    Regards,

    Sonal

  • Hi Sonal,

Thank you for the reply.  My customer really prefers to use GaN, not SiC.  Is there any way to use GaN technology to implement a PFC for 480VAC input?  For example, could you put two GaN transistors in series, and split the voltage across them?  Or any other topologies or "tricks."

I am also wondering if there are any viable PFC approaches that step the AC voltage down to a lower voltage, or to an intermediate voltage.  Are there practical "buck" or "buck/boost" topologies for PFC?  If so, does TI have control solutions for them?

    Thank you,
    Mohan

  • As for my high level specs:  I am working on a 320 Watt power supply, 480Vac line input, 50 Hz, requires active PFC with > 0.95 power factor, and > 0.98 efficiency for the PFC stage.  This will feed a downstream resonant converter.  If TI has single chip controllers for PFC + resonant LLC converter, I would be interested to know this.  Thanks!

  • Hello Mohan,

Of course, you may connect multiple GaN Fets in cascade to split the voltage across each switch, similar to any SiC switch. Unfortunately, we do not have any reference design to cater to your application spec.

We do not have a single chip solution for both the PFC and LLC conversion stage. However, I would recommend using UCC28180 (PFC) + UCC25640X (LLC) as a complete solution for your spec. Below is an example that would help showcase the performance of both these controllers.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi Sonal,

Thank you for the information.  This is quite helpful.  I will take a look at the reference design you suggested.

Thanks again for the great support.
