BQ40Z50-R2: Getting Error 1801 when trying to program chemistry through BQ Studio

I have a custom-designed (by a vendor, not by us) battery pack that uses a BQ40Z50-R2 guage with 8 panasonic NCR18650BF cells. When I tried to program the Chemistry in BQ Studio, I got Error 1801. Any idea what's going on? I'm trying to make a golden image to start battery testing.

Hi Matthew,

I have done some quick testing using my EVM. I don't see this issue. I can program this chemistry id 2039 with any problem.

Did you see this issue on a TI EVM?

Yes, I'm using a TI EV2400 running FW version 0.28, as shown in the screenshot. I can send other commands just fine and am receiving data from the battery pack. I've tried restarting both the computer and the program a few times to no avail.

I just tried to upload it, but for some reason it won't let me submit my post with it attached. I just downloaded it today from the TI web page for the BQ40Z50-R2 (link below) and programmed the device using BQ Studio and the EV2400.

Does anyone at least know what the Error Code 1801 actually means? I can't seem to find a list of error codes for BQ Studio anywhere.

Hi Matthew,

It seems like you were using the default R2 firmware. Its default settings are for 3S applications. Make sure you connect 3 battery cells to J1 or J5 connector and also short 3P to 4P. You can also use resistors to stimulate the battery cells. See details in the bq40z50 EVM user's guide.

Ahh, This could definitely be the issue. The battery pack I have has 8 cells. How do I change the settings to account for more cells?

4s2p should be the best configuration since you want to use 8 cells. You need to set the DA Configuration[CC1:CC0] = 0x03 to let the gauge firmware know that 4 cells are used.

For clarity, do I do that by editing the .srec file or by changing something through BQ Studio? If it's changing the .srec file, is there some documentation somewhere regarding which hex value corresponds to which setting? Thanks!

The .srec file is more like a binary file. You would need to change configurations in the bqStudio.
