BQ76920: number detection of connected battery cells

Part Number: BQ76920

Hello,

I'm working on a cell battery monitor for 3-5 cells. I'm planning to use a BQ76920 (3-5 cells). In a datasheet I can find a table 24. where the cell conections for the different number of cells connected to this ICs are shown. It looks that number of cells must be determinited in advance (because some inputs must be shorted) and I can't connect sometimes 3 and sometimes 5 cells to BQ76920. Am I correct?

Many thanks,
Kind regards,
Dejan.

  • Hi Dejan,

You can connect 3 cells to a part wired for 5 cells, there will be extra components and connections which you don't need.  The part will ignore the cells below UVMINQUAL and not detect these as under voltage, like with a normal connection the host must determine if a missing cell is supposed to be there. If any transient condition pulls the cell voltage above UVMINQUAL for sufficient time you will get a UV fault.  Other than simple evaluation we don't recommend it.
