ultra low leakage current smart battery charging IC with smart powerpath management and auto charge on off

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25155, TPS62802

Hello,

I am looking for smart battery charging IC having below functionality. so could you please suggest best IC for that?

-smart power path management

-ultra low leakage current, preferable in nano amp.

- IC have functionality or pin to turn on off battery charging section

- Auto charge on off to prevent battery over charge.

- I need to measure current also, so if there is any functionality to measure current by MCU.

-it would be better if IC has inbuilt switching regulator or LDO to provide two outputs 4.2V and  3.3V.

Thanks,

Karun

  • Hi Karun,

What is the battery chemistry, max charge voltage, battery capacity and maximum input voltage?

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Any Battery chemistry from these three will be ok.  LiFePo4 or Lithium Iron or LiPo

To get more choosing options for battery charging IC I have not fixed battery.

for LiFePo4 max charge voltage is : 3.6V

and for Li ion and LiPomax charge voltage is : 4.2V

Max input voltage is +5V DC.

and battery capacity is not fixed, will add cells in parallel if more capacity required. but it may be around 6000mah to 12000mah.

  • Hello Karun,

Take a look at the BQ25155. It is a smart power path charger with a 7 channel 16 bit ADC which allows you to measure charge current. It also has a LDO. The battery regulation voltage can be programmed between 3.6V and 4.6V. The device has multiple low power mode including 10nA in shipmode and 460nA in low power mode.

  • Thanks Sharafadeen for reply,

    BQ25155 looks good,

Currently I am developing product which should run minimum 10 years on battery.

So trying to reduce every energy loss or leakage.

I need both 4 volt and 3.3V in system.

So is there any such ic available which has switching regulator instead of LDO. (I need 3.3V and 150mA current). Because switching regulator has higher efficiency than LDO.

And also one more question, regarding battery chemistry.

Could you please suggest which battery chemistry is best for long usage like 10 years.

    Regards,

    Karun

  • Hello Karun,

You can add a buck converter like the TPS62802 to the design which is a small solution size device. The usage time will depend on the load profile and the number of discharge cycle. Lithium iron batteries typically have between 600 to 1000 life cycles.
