TI UCC28950 Application Questions

This should be a pretty simple question to someone who knows how to design with this chip…question is with the slope compensation setting for Average Current Mode control. I’m guessing that you set it up for VCM on the RSUM pin, since ACM does not require slope compensation…but I’d like to verify that.

  • I am not sure why someone would want to use this device in average current mode control.  The only place where I have seen average current mode control used is in PFC pre-regulators.  When I read that this device could be used for average current mode control in the data sheet, I recommend that they remove the comment.

The benefits of peak current mode control is cycle by cycle current limiting that prevents transformer saturation.  For this reason peak current mode control for a phase shifted full bridge topology is a verypopular technique.  I believe that these benefits go away if you are using average current mode control and you may need  a DC blocking capacitor on the primary of the transformer to prevent transformer saturation.
