TPS65381A-Q1: Do I have to communicate with the device to get the output rails I need?

Hello,

I'm looking into using this device to power a Hercules MCU and another device that needs 5V input.

Is it possible to configure this device in hardware to give 1.2V, 3.3V and 5V outputs? Or do I have to use SPI to configure the device to produce these outputs? I want to avoid having to communicate with the device.

Hi Leslie,

It is possible to configure the TPS65381A-Q1 to generate 1.2V, 3.3V and 5V since VDD1, VDD3/5 and VDD5 regulators are enabled by default. The only regulator which is not enabled by default and requires SPI to enable it is VSOUT1.

With that said, the biggest benefit of the TPS65381A-Q1 is the ability to monitor and run diagnostic which play a big role if you are developing a functional safe application.

Thanks for your answer. Which pin would supply the 1.2V? Is it VDD1_G?

Hi Leslie,

VDD1 regulator requires additional components (external FET and a resistor divider) which are connected to VDD1_G and VDD1_SENSE to output 1.2V. For a reference on how to configure VDD1 to generate 1.2V please refer to Figure 6-1. Typical Application Diagram in the TPS65381A-Q1 datasheet.
