LM25116: Using the IC for a 7S lipo charger

Part Number: LM25116

I'm currently in the process of designing a 7-cell lipo charger(29.4V), using an external 36V power supply. 

An external circuit will be used to se the max current. As of now, this will be between 5-20Amps. I was wondering if it is at all possible to use the IC in this way? Because it will continuously be working at it's current limit, till the CV part of the charging starts. 

If not, is there an alternative I can use?

    I think you might want to also check the battery management ICs that maybe better suited for these type of application.

    These ICs may have some features that is specific in terms of each battery chemistry that you are planning to charge

    Thanks for the reply. There is already a BMS integrated in the battery. And looking at the available IC's, there is not one usable for my application. 

    My idea is to just use a DC/DC Buck Converter to create a suitable voltage for the battery, in this case 29.4V, and then use a microcontroller to control the current. So upon connecting the battery, the MCU will check the voltage, if it's below a certain threshold, it will 'trickle-charge' the battery, and once it reaches a good voltage, it will apply the full current. This current will be set by the user, and can vary between 5-15 amps. 

    But by reading the datasheet I'm not certain the LM25116 will just follow the voltage of the battery when the current limit is reached, so it acts like a constant current source. Or if it will completly shut down activity for a moment.
