We have been using this chip, BQ20Z60DBT-R1, in our products for several years. But recently we found a special note like below in product description,

Not Recommended for New Designs

My questions are,

1. Whether BQ20Z60DBT-R1 is not recommended for new desings? If so, why?

2. How many years can this chip last? Did we need to look for alternative for BQ20Z60DBT-R1? If yes, could you help to recommend new alternative?

Hello User,

1. It is fairly old and there is a newer firmware bq20z60-r1. The R1 is still fairly old.

2. The bq20z60-r1 is showing active. This is the upgrade path, but you should also take a look at the bq40z50-R3. This is a much more recent part.

Thank you for your quickly response.

For BQ20Z60-R1, read data on 0X00 but for BQ40Z50 read data on 0x23. And a flag bit on some register have different location such as PFstatus.SUV.

If we used BQ40Z50 which means we have to upgrade the firmware for our control board. And for my customers, if they want to replace spares of battery, we need to upgrade firmware for them firstly. It will bring us great difficulties.

1. Based on this situation, could you help us to recommend the other IC which have the same standard for BQ20Z60-R1?

2. How many years can this chip (BQ20Z60-R1) last? If TI has no problem in providing BQ20Z60-R1, we don't want to update it.

BQ20z60-R1 is marked as NRND however customer can still order this device. Please refer to TI official messaging regarding product life cycle: http://www.ti.com/support-quality/quality-policies-procedures/product-life-cycle.html
