TPS727: Drop out current consumption

Part Number: TPS727
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A20

Hi,

I am using the TPS72733 to regulate an input voltage of nominal 3.7V. All works fine but when the input voltage falls to around 3.3V (the regulation voltage) the current consumption of the regulator increases to around 500uA. Is this expected behaviour?

Thanks

  • Hi,

Yes, this is common with most LDO's as they get into drop-out, their IQ increases.

We do have a newer low IQ RF LDOwhich is much better all around. The TPS7A20 is now sampling.

Let me know what you think.

    Regards,

  • Hi,

Thanks for the confirmation regarding the increased Iq.

Regarding the TPS7A20 I notice the line in the data sheet for Ground Pin Current in dropout states a maximum of 20uA, is this effectively the maximum Iq under these conditions?

    Thanks

    Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

This is the worst-case no-load IQ under normal operating conditions.

I was able to get this simulation of the TPS7A20 showing the behavior as VIN rises through 3.0V (VOUT set to 3.0V).

    I hope this helps.
