UCC28950: parameters optimization

Part Number: UCC28950
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27714EVM-551, UCC256402

Regarding UCC28950, the TI Reference Design UCC27714EVM-551 (600W: 12V/50A) utilizes Vitec 75PR8107, 75PR8108, and 60PR964. I would like to ask the following:

1) Any suggestions for proper transformer and inductors part numbers for 48VDC output?
2) Is there any other companies who provide proper Tranformer and inductors that work with UCC28950?

Thanks

  • Hello ,

You should be able to adjust the transformer turns ratio to achieve 48V at 12.5 A.  The magnetizing inductance and shim inductance should not change.

The following application note reviews how the UCC287714EVM-551 was designed and their are equations for the transformer in the application.

Phase shifted full bridge's use custom magnetics.  Wurth or Renco should be able to help you out with this.

The PE-63587 is just a gate drive transformer.  Just fine one with similar specifications from Digikey and it should work fine.

The UCC28950 has ZVS switching on the primary and you will only have switching losses on the secondary.  To 95% efficiency just requires properly selecting your components based on Rdson.   The transformer and magnetics will also have to consider DCR as well as core loss.  The following excel design tool should aid you in your design process.

All the reference designs we have for the UCC28950 can be found in the reference design tool folder.

The following link will get you to TIs reference design library.  Here you can search based on your input and output power level to see if their is a design close to what you need.  For a 600W power range you could use and LLC as well, that achieves 96% efficiency.  You could consider using the UCC256402 LLC controllers.

Regards and Thanks for choosing TI.

  • Thanks for your feedback. I tried to reach out to Vitec with no luck so far. I will reach out to Wurth and Renco. One of the reason LLC is not an option is that with LLC it is difficult to sync or force current sharing. I will mark this as solved.
