BQ24170: Protection circuit for 2- 3 Li-Ion cells to avoid overcharge

Hi Team, 

A customer of mine is evaluating the BQ24170 and they intend to use this IC to charge 2-3 Li-Ion cells in series. However they would like to know if they need an additional protection to prevent an overcharge in case one of the cells get damaged? (or is this handled by the battery over-voltage protection feature in the IC)?
