WEBENCH® Tools/LM5116: Necessity to use 2 NMOS like M1

Part Number: LM5116

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Dear engineers,

I would like to ask if I need to use 2 pcs of NMOS transistors like M1 in my design. I would like to use 1 pcs IRF540N instead.

Many thanks

  • Hi Martin,

Normally adding 2 pcs of NMOS transistor is to reduce the Rds on on the FETs. Therefore this is done for efficiency and power dissipation on the FETs.

Therefore, for operating purpose, the part should be able to work with just one FET.

After looking at the webench data, it looks like the power dissipation on the MOSFET would indicate quite high junction temperature for the FETs.

What i would do is to allocate a footprint for a second FET and do not populate if you find later that the temperature of the FET is ok with just using 1 FET.

    Thanks
