I'm looking for a Li-Ion battery charger for 3 cells. Overall the charging circuit consists of the charger, a fuel gauge and a second-protection IC.

As can be seen in the attached document (page 3),  such a circuit can be built with bq24745 charger and bq20z45 fuel gauge. In the document these ICs seem to be communicating with each other (the fuel gauge controls the charger) but I didn't find such a function in their datasheets. From the datasheets it seems that each one of them should be controlled by the host independently.  Please clarify that issue.

    If the gas gauge IC is set to "broadcast mode" and is powered up, it will keep send charger voltage and current infomation through the SMBus. The charger is a slave. It doesn't send anything back. But, it will follow the SMBus commands to charge the battery.
