bq24745 controlled by bq20z45 fuel gauge

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24745, BQ20Z45

I'm looking for a Li-Ion battery charger for 3 cells. Overall the charging circuit consists of the charger, a fuel gauge and a second-protection IC.

As can be seen in the attached document (page 3),  such a circuit can be built with bq24745 charger and bq20z45 fuel gauge. In the document these ICs seem to be communicating with each other (the fuel gauge controls the charger) but I didn't find such a function in their datasheets. From the datasheets it seems that each one of them should be controlled by the host independently.  Please clarify that issue.

  • If the gas gauge IC is set to "broadcast mode" and is powered up, it will keep send charger voltage and current infomation through the SMBus. The charger is a slave. It doesn't send anything back. But, it will follow the SMBus commands to charge the battery.
