+24V (LED) driver for cartridge heater

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPIC6C596

( NOTE: I already posted this question in the motor drivers forum but probably a LED driver would be more suitable for this function).

For controlling the temperature of a cup filled with liquid ethane we have to control the temperature between -160C and -180C. Therefore we will use a temp sensor and a cartridge heater to maintain the temperature of the ethane around -160C.  The heater is a small cartridge type (resistance wire in a small 1/8"tube) and will work at +24V/30W max.Probably we will use this heater: https://www.therm-x.com/watlow-firerod-cartridge-heater-c1a-9602.html   We want to control the heater by current control. So we are looking for a controller (preferably with SPI interface because we want this to control by a PC with USB to serial bridge can be configured as SPI or I2C or RS485) and we already found a temp sensor interface chip with SPI) that can handle this. Maybe you have a suggestion for a suitable controller? Maybe a LED driver with SPI interface? Other interface (e.g. I2C)is possible but SPI would be more convenient for us).

And something else but related to powe managemant: Maybe you have a suggestion for a low cost relay driver (probably around +24V/300mA)

  • Hi Chris,

From our product line of view, we don't have a device that has the SPI interface with such high power, But I have one recommendation to you-TPS54201.

For relay driver, maybe you can check with our TPIC6C596 or something else, but I believe the motor driver team have more good choice.
