TPS659039-Q1: Power domain of TPS659039

Part Number: TPS659039-Q1

Hi

The specification of TPS659039  mentions:

SMPS4 and SMPS5 cannot be used as separate converters. In dual-phase configuration the two interleaved synchronous buck regulator phases with built-in current sharing operate in opposite phase.

SMPS4 and SMPS5 of TPS659039 chip designed on DEMO board are used together. Can supply 4000mA of current .
But the load of our circuit only needs less than 2000mA of current, so only one SMPS4 or SMPS5 is needed. We tried to open SMPS5 and only keep SMPS4. The circuit can operate normally. I want to know can I keep SMPS5 open? What are the hidden dangers? For example in RE

  • Hi,

We do not recommend splitting SMPS4 and SMPS4 SMPS rails. These are intended and validated to work in dual-phase. They do not have the proper circuity to be reliable when separated. This is out if the scope of our specifications, which means there are both reliability and performance risks. I don't recommend to do this.

Please let me know if you need any additional assistance.

    Thanks,

    Nastasha
