TLC59291: Maximum current through exposed pad

Part Number: TLC59291

Hi,

The datasheet for this part doesn't explicitly state a value for the maximum simultaneous current that can be sunk through all OUTn pins at the same time?  It mentions "Output current (DC) OUT0 to OUT15" at 65mA max, but using the term "to" doesn't make it clear whether that's all outputs on simultaneously.

Obviously this value is affected by how well the heat is drawn away from the exposed pad through the PCB layout.

Thanks,

Robin

  • Hi Robin,

All turn-on channels would be as global brightness control setting simultaneously.
Maximum output current could refer to datasheet section 8.3.1 and 8.3.2. The output could be set up to 65mA but we recommended using it within 50mA.

  • Thanks for the reply Hardy,

Section 8.3.1 and 8.3.2 refer to formulas that allow you to calculate "the maximum constant-current value for each output".  It's still not clear whether I can drive 16-channels at 50mA per channel, all at the same time? So 16x50 mA = 800mA in total?

My application only requires 20mA per channel, potentially with 16x channels sinking 20mA at the same time - so 16x 20mA = 320mA in total.

I hope my question is clearer.

    Regards,

    Robin

  • Hi Robin,

This formula is for the maximum output current of each channel. Yes it is OK to set all 16 channels to drive 50mA.
