TPS53355: 5V/30A application support

Hello expert,

Customer is wondering if TPS53355 could support 5V/30A application. I used WEBENCH to simulate at 30C Ta and it works. But in datasheet, I only saw 5Vout efficiency up to 25A. May I have your confirmation if TPS53355 could support 12V->5V/30A application(30A is peak current and it is for HDD application)? Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Ann,

    The max current will mostly depend on the Ta requirement and if there is any airflow in the application. Please see Figure 33 for a recommended SOA to keep the device temperature within its specifications. This example uses a fsw of 500 kHz, and with 30A load the maximum ambient temperature with no airflow is ~55°C. It would not be able to support more than 30A if the ambient temperature is >55°C.

    If a lower fsw is used then a higher Ta may be possible. The tradeoff would be a larger solution size due to a larger inductor and more input/output capacitors.
