BQ2980: Thermal Cut Off From Die Without Thermistor?

Part Number: BQ2980

Hi,

I am looking at building a battery protection IC that will be soldered into LiPo packs.

We are trying to design the protection IC for the lowest costs, and are wondering how the thermal cutoff work on the BQ2980 without a thermistor?  We are trying to get a thermal cutoff at 35C.

There is a note in the BQ2980 datasheet, that:

"Alternatively, the CTR pin can be configured to connect an external Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistor for FET OT protection in addition to the internal die temperature sensor".

How does the cut-off work without the PTC thermistor?

Thanks,

-Tim

  • Hi Tim,

Unfortunately, the PTC option does not appear to be enabled on any of the available device configurations in the datasheet table (see page 3 Device Configuration Options). The internal temperature sensor only comes with 75C or 85C cutoff temperatures.

    Best regards,

    Matt
